
In 1993, as a result of the reform of the higher education system in Ukraine, the Department of Automotive Engineering of the Military Department of Lviv Polytechnic Institute (the cycle of wheeled and tracked vehicles; the cycle of repair and operation of vehicles; the cycle of automotive service and driving) was established on the basis of the cycles of the Military Department of the Military Training Department at Lviv Polytechnic State University, which began training specialists in the specialty “Automobiles and Automotive Economy” in two specializations “Operation and repair of automotive equipment” and ‘Use of automotive units’.
According to the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 1220 dated 06.11.1997, the Military Training Department at Lviv Polytechnic State University was granted the status of a Military Institute at Lviv Polytechnic State University, which included the 1st (Automotive) Faculty. Since 1996, the faculty has included the departments of Operation of Military Vehicles, Repair of Military Vehicles, Motor Vehicle Support and Military Transportation, and Combat Wheeled and Tracked Vehicles. In 2004, based on changes to the staff, the above departments were reorganized into the Department of Operation and Repair of Motor Vehicles and the Department of Automotive Engineering.

In order to implement the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine of 26.05.2005 №381 “On measures to optimize the network of higher military educational institutions and military educational units of higher military educational institutions”, the Order of the Minister of Defense of Ukraine of 16.06.2005 №339 “On approval of the action plan for optimizing military education and concentrating the training of military specialists in all specialties of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the basis of the Lviv Military Institute of the National University ”Lviv Polytechnic”

In 2007, the two departments merged to form a single department for the training of automotive specialists - the Department of Automotive Engineering. In connection with the launch of training of automotive professionals, in 2013 the Department of Automotive Engineering was renamed the Department of Automobiles and Automotive Engineering.

At different times, the departments were headed by Colonels Kramarchuk V.D., Belyaev O.V., Malnov S.I., Bereziuk V.F., Klymchuk V.T., Anokhin I.E., Kozlov V.I., Onishchenko V.V., Bilodid V.P., Zirkevych V.M., Andrienko A.M., Lieutenant Colonel Ivanov O.M. Since August 2020, the department has been headed by Colonel Grubel M.G. |
Over the period of the department's activity, more than a thousand graduates have been trained and are professionally performing tasks in various positions. The department is especially proud of those graduates who, taking direct part in the support of combat operations during the Joint Forces Operation in eastern Ukraine, demonstrated high professionalism, personal courage and heroism, for which they were awarded high state awards:

Lieutenant PENTSAK Pavlo Vasylovych (graduated in 2014) was awarded the Medal “For Military Service to Ukraine”;

Colonel Andrii Mykolaiovych HALAS (graduated in 2001) was awarded the medal “To the Defender of the Fatherland”;
Captain Taras Orestovych SHERBA (graduated in 2007) was awarded the Medal “To the Defender of the Fatherland”;
Medal “For Impeccable Service” of the III degree - Captain Yevhen Myachyn (graduated in 2009).
At the present stage, the department teaches the structure and basics of operation of the main models of military automotive equipment to cadets of all specialties, and is also a graduate department for training road transport specialists, engineers in the organization of operation and repair of vehicles.
