Brief history of the Academy

The history of this military educational establishment dates back to the 1st October, 1899, when an Austrian Infantry Cadet School was founded in Lviv. It was the first military educational establishment in West Ukraine which was the part of Austrian-Hungarian Empire.

A lot of Ukrainian officers who participated in liberation movement had received military education there. The list of them comprises the names of the commandant of UNA Colonel Hnat Stefaniv, the commander of 7th Lviv brigade of UNA Lieutenant-colonel Alfred Bizants and brigade commander otaman Bohuslav Shashkevych.

In 1921 Polish Cadet Corps № 1 was transferred from Krakov (Lobzov) to Lviv.

At the end of 1939 Lviv infantry school was formed; since 1940 there 15th rifle brigade had been located; and in April 1941 32nd tank brigade of 4th infantry corps of the Red Army was based. During the WWII there was a military hospital.

In November 1939 in Russian Briansk military political school was formed as a part of Orlov military district. It trained officers for the Red Army. At the beginning of the WWII the school was redislocated to Bobrov, and later to Khalturin in the Urals. In 1944 the school was redislocated to the labirateded Hkarkiv and became Hkakiv military political school of the Red Army.

During the second World this School trained approximately 11 thousand officers who were immediately deployed to the battlefields of the war. Sixteen of the graduates were decorated with a honorary title — the Hero of the Soviet Union.

Military Political school was transferred to Lviv in the postwar period in 1947. It trained officers for the Soviet Army.In the period from 1951 to 1958 it was renamed into Lviv courses for training political personnel of the Soviet Army, and in 1958 it became Lviv military political school again.

In 1962 it was reformed into Higher military political school of the Soviet Amy and Navy (further into Lviv Higher military political school) which trained military journalists and organizers of cultural activities (heads of military clubs and officers’ clubs) for the USSR Armed Forces.

Navy department was formed in the school which trained the same specialists for the USSR Navy. Since 1969 had trained officers for the Armed Forces of foreign countries. The servicemen of more than 25 countries from Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America studied at the special department there. Present President Of Mongolia C.Elbegdorzh was among the graduates. In 1975 the school was awared the Red Star Order for significant achievements in training officers.

A new era for Lviv Military Institute started with Ukrainian Independence and formation its own Armed Forces. Following the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine № 490 from August 19, 1992, a modern higher military educational establishment was formed on the basis of Lviv Higher Military School and Military departments of civilian Higher educational establishments on October 8, 1993, which for the first time in Ukrainian history was deeply integrated into the system of civilian higher education by the act of joining National University “Lvivska Politekhnika”. This arranged implementation of the fundamental principle of the Concept of Military Education in Ukraine consolidated with the Resolution of the Cabinet of ministers of Ukraine № 1410 from December 15, 1997, which determined that “military education integrates into the state educational system on principles of unitary legislative, regulatory and legal framework.”

Closely integrated into National University in 1993 Lviv Military Institute started training of the military personnel in fifteen specialities including “Tactics of mechanized units”, “Tactics of airmobile (parachute and airborne) units” (cadets of these specialities were transferred to Odesa Army institute in 1995) as well as “Financial support, economical support of combat activities and logistics”, “Jurisprudence” et cetera. In 1998 the establishment got the name of the Military Institute of National University “Lviv Polytechnika” and Battle Banner.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of training military personnel in Galychyna and to praise significant role in training highly qualified professionals for Ukrainian Armed Forces on November 18, 2000 the Institute was honored by the name of Hetman Petro Sahaydachnyi, by the President’s decree and it was also awarded with the charter of honor.

By the Resolution of Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers № 381 from May 26, 2005 the educational establishment was reorganized into Lviv Army Institute and in September 2006 Institute started training the personnel of all the specialities for the Army of Ukrainian Armed Forces.

On September 30, 2006 the Institute was visited by the President of Ukraine, the Commander in Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, who highly estimated organization of training military personnel for Ukrainian Armed Forces.

On September 1, 2009 in accordance to the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine № 467 from May 13, 2009 Lviv “Order of the Red Star” Hetman Petro Sahaydachnyi Army Institute was withdrawn from the structure of “Lvivska Politekhnika” National University and transformed into the Academy of the Amy named after Hetman Petro Sahaydachnyi with an NCO college inside its compound.

Nowadays the Academy of the Amy named after Hetman Petro Sahaydachnyi is the leading higher military educational establishment of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine which combines traditions of classical Europian and home military schools, creatively uses modern experience in training military specialists of the leading countries, high dynamics of development own educational resources and scientific and pedagogical potencial.

Historical chronology

On the whole history of foundation and development of military educational establishments located on the territory of the Army Academy covers the following phases:

I. Austro-Hungarian Empire:

  • 1899-1918 – Caesarean and Royal Infantry Cadet School in Lviv (K. und k. Infanterie - Сadettenschule in Lemberg) – evacuated from Lviv in 1914.

II. The Polish Republic (II Rich Pospolita):

  • 1919 – 1939 – Cadet Corps №1 (Korpus Kadetów Nr.1), by the order of the Minister of Military Affairs from 25.07.1919 – by March 1921 it was located in Lobzev in the suburbs of Krakow.

III. The Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics:

  • 1939 – 1944 – Briansk Higher Political Military School, under the directive of the General Staff of the Red Army of industrial and agricultural workers from November 18, 1939 – in August 1941 evacuated to town Bobrov inVoroniezh Region, and then through the village Rodnichok of Saratov Region to town Khalturino, Kirov Region (the end of December 1941);
  • 1944 – 1947 – Kharkiv Military Political School, in accordance with the directive of the Central Political Administration of the Soviet Army from August 11, 1944;
  • 1947 – 1951 – Lviv Military Political School, following the order of the Minister of Armed Forces of the USSR from September 4, 1947;
  • 1951 – 1955 – Lviv courses on training political instructors for the Soviet Army, following the order of Military Minister of the USSR from June 5, 1951;
  • 1955 – 1958 – Lviv courses of political instructors of the Soviet Army, under the directive of the General Staff of Ministry of Defense of the USSR from November 11, 1955;
  • 1958 – 1962 – Military Political School of the Soviet Army (including courses on training political instructors for the Army), in accordance with the directive of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR from April 15, 1958;
  • 1962 – 1967 – Higher Military Political School of the Soviet Army and Navy (including courses on training political instructors for the Army), under the resolution of Council of Ministers of the USSR №1166-497 from December 30, 1961;
  • 1967 – 1975 – Lviv Higher Military Political School, by order of the minister of Defense of the USSR from June 15, 1967; in 1975 – awarded with the Order of the Red Star, by the Order of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the USSR from April 30, 1975;
  • 1975 – 1991 – Lviv “Order of the Red Star” Higher Military Political School.

IV. Ukraine:

  • 1991 – 1992 – Lviv Higher Military School; 1992 – 1998 – Department of Military Training of “Lvivska Politekhnika” National University, under the Resolution of Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers №490 from August 19, 1992;
  • 1998 – 2000 – Military Institute of the State University “Lvivska Politekhnika”, under the Resolution of Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers №1220 from November 6, 1997;
  • 2000 – 2006 – Lviv Military “Order of the Red Star” Hetman Petro Sahaydachnyi Institute of “Lvivska Politekhnika” National University, under the President's Decree №1221/2000 from November 10, 2000;
  • 2006 – 2009 – Lviv “Order of the Red Star” Hetman Petro Sahaydachnyi Army Institute “Lvivska Politekhnika” National University, following the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine №381 from May 26, 2005.
  • Since September 2009 – Petro Sahaydachnyi Army Academy, according to the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine № 467 from May 13, 2009.
