Scientific and scientific-technical activity of the department is based on the fulfillment of the requirements of the order of the Minister of Defense of Ukraine № 9, 13.01.2007 ”About the adoption of the Regulations about organization of scientific and scientific-technical activity in the Ukrainian Armed Forces” (with changes), Military political directions concerning formation and realization of military politics in the Ukrainian Armed Forces in 2014 enacted by the order of the Minister of Defense of Ukraine on 17 September, 2012, Organizational methodological directions of the head of General Staff - Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in preparing suggestions to the Combined yearly plan of scientific and scientific-technical activity in the Ukrainian Armed Forces for 2014.
The following researches are conducted at the department:
- research of state, perspectives of development and search of scientific technical ways of creating perspective means of engineering equipment;
- research of problems in training specialists for the Ukrainian Armed Forces in discipline “Military bridges and roads”;
- research of problems in training, use and all-round support in the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Among the personnel of the department there are officers who have got academic degrees and titles: candidate of pedagogical science, associate professor – Diakov Sviatoslav Ivanovych; candidate of technical science Lieutenant Colonel – Kolos Oleksandr Leonidovych.
Main achievements and inventions at the department:
- device for accelerated installing anti-personnel mines of type MOH for protection of low-water wooden bridges from the enemy RRP (raiding reconnaissance party);
- durable construction for firing and observing made from standard reinforced concrete plates – device for filling apparatus bottles of foreign production with compressed air, that are in the armament in the Ukrainian Armed Forces;
- shelter made from standard reinforced concrete plates with horizontal entrance;
- dismountable training simulator of a span made from metal blocks of well-shafts with wooden decking.

Seminars:
Scientific-methodological seminar “Peculiarities of preparing and conducting control measures on special engineering disciplines” was held at the department on 28 May, 2014.
The aim of the methodological seminar: discussion of problems in preparing and conducting control measures on special engineering disciplines, and determining main directions of scientific search.
Organization and conduct of checking cadets, the level of learning of curriculum is an important activity of each department and each teacher.
The aim of control measures concerning special engineering disciplines is checking of knowledge and skills of future officers of military engineering forces that they have got while studying the discipline (section, modular test). In order to effectively check knowledge and skills it is necessary to include fulfillment of combat training norms by cadets into practical part of control tests.
Taking into account the time limitedness on control measures and a big number of personnel in learning groups it is suggested to introduce some changes into “Regulations in organizing and conducting control of knowledge of the cadets of the Army Academy” where to note that it is necessary to have 15 cadets and 1 teacher in a learning group in order to co conduct a modular test.
Place organizational methodological directions about fulfillment and estimation of course papers of the disciplines on the site of the department. Check and arrange tests at the department of special engineering disciplines in correspondence with state requirements and standards.
On 25 December, 2014 scientific- methodological seminar “Use of subject-active approach in teaching special engineering disciplines is the guarantee of a high level of professional readiness of future officers of engineering forces.” The aim of the seminar: discussion of problems in use of subject-active approach in teaching special engineering disciplines at the department.
Use subject-active approach in teaching special engineering disciplines, and form the following professional qualities for cadets in accordance with their future official and combat functions: steady professional orientation; deep academic knowledge, skills, intellectual emotional firmness.
In order to effectively organize a practical part, taking into account ATO experience, , it is reasonable to equip additional special grounds in the international peacekeeping and security centre representing natural destructions and obstacles (forest obstruction, destroyed parts of roads and fortification constructions, destroyed bridges, drowned parts of the area etc.)
Plead the Army Academy leadership for increasing time for military training course by ¼ for cadets of the faculty and conduct it in two stages: the first stage – training course on the positions of commanders of engineering squads in the term IV, the other stage – on the positions of commanders of engineering platoons at the end of the last year of study.
In order to raise level of effectiveness of independent training the efforts of teachers of the department should be aimed at:
working off information methodological material (textbooks, educational methodological workbooks, course of lectures on special engineering disciplines, updating the sets of individual semester tasks, computer complexes, methodological recommendations in organizing independent work taking into account the ATO experience);
improving of educational material and technical resources (making models of special tactical fields, zones, training lines, miniature firing grounds), and provide their application in working programs and educational methodological support.
While adapting the method of learning the discipline “Fortification and camouflage” to the experience of anti-terrorist operation, it is necessary to pay special attention to forming of psychological firmness of future officers to accomplishment of tasks of fortification equipment of positions and regions of troops location under artillery bombardment.
While working out standards of higher education in 2015-2016 provide not less than 236 hours of budget time for educational discipline “Fortification and camouflage” for all specialities and specializations that the cadets learn at the faculty of military engineering and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defense.
In order to introduce subject-active approach into methods of learning educational discipline “Military bridges and roads” it is advisable to involve cadets of senior courses as assistants of a teacher before practical classes with cadets of junior courses.
Place seminar materials about the use of subject-active approach in teaching special engineering disciplines on the site of the department. Military scientific paper of the cadets is a separate kind of scientific and scientific-technical activity that is done under the guidance of pedagogical personnel.
The aim of the scientific paper of cadets is gradual rising of methodological training, harmonious development of scientific thinking, achieving practical skills in research, creative approach to solving tasks of use and maintenance of weapons and military equipment, learning the foundations of organizing and conducting researches.
Military scientific work at the department SED was always organized and coordinated so as to fulfil the order of the Ministry of education and science of Ukraine and Ministry of defense of Ukraine “About the adoption of the instruction about organization of educational activity in higher educational establishments of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and military educational subunits of higher educational establishments of Ukraine” № 221/217, 13.04.2005, the order of the Minister of defense “About the adoption of the Regulations about organization of scientific and scientific-technical activity in the Ukrainian Armed Forces” № 9, 13.01.2007. Organization and control of scientific work in the association is assigned to the head of the department and the leader of scientific technical circle.
Main directions of the research activity for cadets are as follows:
- assisting members of the association in learning disciplines , considering military historical past of Ukraine and periods of military building, up-to-date development of combat equipment and weapons;
- raising level of professional training for cadets;
- gradual mastering the methods of conducting independent military research work by future officers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces;
- working out and active introducing software support into educational process, improvement of skills working with computers;
- investigating problems of social economic and political development of foreign countries, learning their linguistic national peculiarities.
Members of the association take an active part in contests (scientific conferences), in writing scientific articles that are planned for publications in the Academy and outside.
